What is Egg Donation?

Egg donation is the process where a woman donates a few of her eggs to
help another person who is unable to conceive a child. 

Who am I donating to?

  • Women who are experiencing premature ovarian failure: This is a condition where a woman's ovaries stop functioning before the age of 40, making it impossible for her to conceive a child using her own eggs.

  • Women with poor egg quality: Some women may have eggs that are not viable for fertilization or are at a high risk of genetic abnormalities.

  • Women with previous cancer treatment: Certain types of cancer treatments can cause premature ovarian failure or damage a woman's eggs, making it difficult for her to conceive.

  • Women who carry genetic disorders that could be passed on to their children may opt for egg donation to avoid passing on these disorders.

  • Same sex Male couples and Male single parents biologically do not have what it takes to create embryos without the help of an egg donor.

How Does Egg Donation Work?

  • Screening & Matching: You will be screened for medical and psychological suitability and might be matched with a recipient who has similar physical characteristics, such as ethnic make up, personal preferences, educational background, hobbies, talents and esthetic characteristics such as hair and eye color.

  • Legal Contracts: Once you are matched, you will be provided with an attorney who will represent you in the legal contracts and help you understand your rights and protections as an egg donor. The legal contract will also discuss the compensation rate, payment schedule and will also protect you from any medical expenses that may arise from your donation. 

  • Ovarian Stimulation: You will undergo hormonal treatment which stimulates your ovaries to produce multiple eggs. This treatment is the same as a woman who is undergoing an IVF cycle. You will need to be seen in the fertility clinic every day that you are on the medications in order for the fertility doctor to monitor your physical response to medications. Women typically require 10 to 12 days of hormonal medication in order to mature the eggs for the retrieval process.

  • The Egg Retrieval: Once the follicles AKA eggs have matured, you are ready for your egg retrieval. The eggs are retrieved from the ovaries using a fine needle guided by ultrasound. The procedure takes place under local anesthesia in a surgical setting for your safety and protection. There is little to no down time and you can typically assume normal activity within 24 hours. 

  • Your Egg Donation is Complete! After your donation, you will resume periods. Temporary side effects may be bloating, cramping and or tenderness during the medication period and immediately after the egg retrieval procedure. 

  • Donate Again! With a few months between donations, you can donate up to six times and help multiple families.
